Dasha & Transit — FAQ
What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. It divides life into a repeating 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods (Mahadashas), each ruled by a planet. The period running at any time colours the events and themes of that phase.
How is my Dasha calculated?
Your starting Mahadasha is fixed by the Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth, and how far the Moon had moved through it decides how much of that first period was already elapsed. AstroAsk computes the Moon’s exact sidereal position (Lahiri ayanamsa) and derives the whole 120-year timeline from it.
What is an Antardasha (Bhukti)?
Each Mahadasha is sub-divided into nine Antardashas (also called Bhuktis), one for every planet, in Vimshottari order and proportional to their period lengths. The Mahadasha sets the broad chapter; the Antardasha within it refines the month-to-month flavour.
What is the difference between Dasha and Transit (Gochar)?
Dasha is your personal internal clock, fixed from birth. Transit (Gochar) is where the planets are in the sky right now, the same for everyone. Astrologers read them together — a result shows when a Dasha and a supporting transit line up. See the AstroAsk Planetary Transits page for current Gochar dates.
